Yolande Kouznetsov
A Word from the President

The Burgundy International Piano Competition was born from an ambitious desire: to reveal artistic gems — young talents with exceptional potential, sometimes still unknown, discovered with the intuition that they will mark the stages of tomorrow.

But behind every pianist who moves us, there is a guide: a look, an ear, a demand transmitted in the quiet of the studio. One example among many: without Mozart’s father, there would have been no Mozart. With this competition, I pursue a commitment dear to me: to value both the artist and the one who has guided them thus far. This is why it seems important to highlight the work and dedication of the teacher through the awarding of certificates of recognition. Excellence is often born from a relationship.

This competition is not only about rewarding virtuosity. It is for those who dare intensity, sincerity, and commitment. We believe a competition must be a springboard, but also a profound human and artistic encounter.

The jury I have brought together includes renowned artists and pedagogues whose diverse approaches enrich the dialogue, while sharing the same demanding and humanistic vision of music.

Their combined perspectives — both caring and rigorous — ensure that each candidate receives a fair and inspiring evaluation, true to the spirit of art.

Lastly, this competition is rooted in a region with a strong identity: Burgundy. In Beaune, we weave a link between music and visual arts, with immersive scenography and a collective exhibition designed by a group of artist-caregivers. Here, art becomes a shared language — a gesture of beauty, openness, and care.

I wish each candidate to experience this stage as a formative moment. And I hope this competition will, over the years, become an unmissable event in Europe’s musical landscape.

Good luck!

Yolande Kouznetsov

Founder and Artistic Director of Beaune Piano Fest, Yolande Kouznetsov draws on a rich musical heritage and an international career to bring an ambitious and inclusive vision to the association. Descended from a family of Russian concert pianists, she combines tradition and innovation to make classical music vibrant and accessible to all audiences.

A graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon, she is a laureate of several international competitions, including First Prize at the Cantù Competition (Italy). Her career has taken her to perform as a soloist and chamber musician in prestigious festivals, renowned European venues, and with orchestras in France, Russia, and Germany. As Co-Artistic Director of the Lyon International Piano Competition, she shares her expertise with the next generation and is regularly invited to serve on juries for international competitions.

In 2024, Yolande embodied her desire to push artistic boundaries by joining the duo Abélard for an exceptional tour with the industrial metal band Rammstein. Through 30 performances across Europe, Abélard reimagined the musical experience with two-piano covers in stadiums filled with over a million spectators.

With Beaune Piano Fest, Yolande aspires to share her experience, promote emerging talents, and develop innovative artistic projects such as the immersive show Piano Tales. Through the association, she aims to establish Beaune as a key destination for music and the performing arts, while fostering strong connections between artists and audiences.

In 2026, she takes a major new step with the creation of the first Burgundy International Piano Competition — a celebration of musical excellence designed to reveal the great talents of tomorrow. This competition also stands out for its deeply human and multidisciplinary dimension: it fosters a unique dialogue between music and visual arts through immersive scenography and an exhibition of artworks installed in and around the competition venues. Led by a collective of local artists from diverse backgrounds — healthcare workers, child and adult psychiatrists, special education professionals, and members of the youth justice system — this initiative blends artistic sensitivity with social commitment. It enriches the audience experience, broadens access to culture, and makes the competition a truly unique event, where pianistic excellence meets solidarity, care, and human connection.

Maurice Emmanuel and the Burgundy International Piano Competition

Maurice Emmanuel

The Burgundy International Piano Competition pays tribute to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist, by including a Sonatina movement in the program of the MASTER category.

Born in Bar-sur-Aube and raised in Beaune, he drew part of his inspiration from Burgundian folk songs.

Trained at the Paris Conservatory, he led a dual career as an innovative composer — exploring ancient modes and popular rhythms — and as an influential teacher, counting among his students Robert Casadesus, Yvonne Lefébure, Olivier Messiaen, and Henri Dutilleux.

The inclusion of a Sonatina or Sonatina movement in the competition reflects our desire to highlight regional musical heritage. Candidates discover an original pianistic writing that blends the French tradition with Burgundian roots, creating a direct link with the history and cultural identity of Beaune.

Scenography

Isabelle Tchang Tchong

Isabelle Tchang Tchong – Artist & Art Therapist

An engaged artist and art therapist, Isabelle Tchang Tchong places the human being and emotion at the heart of her approach. With a degree in special education and a Master’s in art therapy, she has worked for over twenty years with vulnerable audiences — children and adolescents in child psychiatry, incarcerated individuals, youths supported by juvenile justice, and adults experiencing psychological distress or precariousness. In parallel, she has developed a personal artistic practice focused on painting and installation, exploring notions of fragility, transformation, and intimate resonance. Within Beaune Piano Fest, she leads the artistic direction of scenography and exhibitions, creating immersive universes where visual arts and music engage in dialogue.

Scenography at the Heart of the Competition

The Burgundy Piano Competition asserts its uniqueness by forging a strong bond between music and visual arts. Under the direction of Isabelle Tchang Tchong, an immersive scenography and a collective exhibition transform the competition venues into a true space for expression and encounters. The artworks, installed in the concert hall, are created by a collective of local artists with rich and varied backgrounds — healthcare professionals, a child psychiatrist, an adult psychiatrist, special education professionals, and a youth justice executive — who offer a sensitive perspective on the relationship between art, care, and youth. This profoundly inclusive and humanistic approach aims to enrich the spectator experience, broaden access to art, and make the competition a place where musical excellence meets solidarity and sharing.
